Walk Across NunavutThe Nunavut territory is vast and unknown to many who are not from the region; Google intends to change that by adding Nunavut’s capital city, Iqaluit to the search engine’s constantly growing list of Street View maps available on its mapping platform.

Google Maps Street View service allows Google users to see panoramic, 360-degree pictures throughout cities, towns and regions. From schools and businesses to churches and homes, Google Street View provides “social geography” – as opposed to the raw geography that depicts mountains, lakes and settlements. But obtaining the photos necessary for Google’s Street View technology invites a new set of problems unique to the region.

On Baffin Island’s Frobisher rests the city of Iqaluit. Due to the remote nature of the city, it is far too expensive for Google to send vehicles to the region. Some of the roads are difficult to reach in the winter and nonexistent in the summer. Google wanted to capture Iqaluit during the winter, the city’s dominant season, which meant finding an adventurous and fit group of individuals. (more…)
